Hail to the Travel Website Gods
Sales of Chow! Venice are way, way up all of a sudden. Amazon is selling copies like mad - there are something like twenty "used and new" copies available right now, because all the other booksellers want to jump on the bandwagon. And finally, Borders reordered! After months and months. Of course Ruth and I are ecstatic and hoping that we can go into a new and revised edition soon.
I think that possibly Durant Imboden had something to do with this. He runs the websites www.veniceforvisitors.com and www.europeforvisitors.com, and I emailed him a few weeks back and asked him if he'd like to see a copy. He did, and I sent it, and then he wrote a great review of Chow! on his website.
These are the kinds of reviews we live for, and Durant Imboden is a cool guy. Not just because he wrote a good review, but because the guy is PRESENT. He always answers email, and is a helpful and sincere person. I have used his site since I started going to Venice regularly in 1999, and it is a great site with a ton of information. Durant Imboden did not have to take the time to do what he did, but he did take it, and it really helped us. We have sent out hundreds of copies to newspapers and magazines - where did that get us? Nowhere, and fast. Clearly, newspapers and magazines are not the way of the future.
There are so many great people running websites like www.europeforvisitors.com and www.slowtrav.com and www.egullet.org. I can't even imagine how we (well, me at least) did without these websites before, and the people running them are working constantly and tirelessly (well maybe not tirelessly, but that sounds good) to get all this information out there. And they are always ready to send email or offer help aside from their websites, too. It's not like this in the rest of the world - it seems to be some trippy travel lover thing.
Anyway here is a link to Durant's site and the review of Chow! Venice:

Sorry about the cut and paste there - I am totally lame and can't figure how to insert a URL. (And I am too lazy to ask.)
I'll be writing soon from Atlanta, and then, Venice!

Great news on the increased sales!!
I fixed your links. To add a link, type in the words for the link, then highlight them, then click the URL button and type in the URL (keeping the http:// prefix that is displayed in the input box).

Not complaining... but, one day, I too will get my prize, your book. The new and edited version, of course.
