Four days is not enough

Let's think about Madrid for a bit. We've got four days there. Since there is so much to see and do, I am trying to figure out the best way to plan our time - without letting our plans totally control us, if that makes any sense.

Saturday, we get in very early, and I imagine we will drop the bags at the office of the apartment building where we are staying until we can check in, and then we'll go out and explore the area around our building. We are fortunate, the apartment is smack in the middle of the center, on a side street between Plaza Mayor and Puerta del Sol. We'll get a feel for the city, eat some tapas, drink some cava, pick up some supplies for the apartment, check in, cruise around some more and then stay up as late as we can.

Our apartment is here:

We have #51 - which has a terrace!!!

Sunday, I want to go to the El Rastro flea market. I love it - a flea market that doesn't start until 10 AM. Totally my speed. After, the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, or the Prado. In the afternoon, to El Retiro Park, which is suppose to be extra special on Sundays, when lots of Madrilenos hang out there. I love hanging out in big city parks, preferably with wine and snacks either at a cafe or on a park bench.

Monday, the museums are closed so we will go to the Palacio Real, the Royal Palace of Spain. I'm torn here, because I want to go to Segovia, but when? There is so much to see in Madrid. I guess we can try to squish in the Palacio on the weekend, maybe go Saturday if we have the energy. Argh, already my plans are impossibly complicated. That is the problem with plans.

Tuesday. The Prado, or the Thyssen-Bornemisza, whichever we did not do before.

In between all this stuff, lots of tapas, hopefully a dinner at Botin, and some meals at restaurants recommended by other travelers. I want some time on the terrace of the apartment, chillin' with wine and my journal. And I want to bring flowers to the train station where I am sure there will be a memorial.

In two weeks from today we will be in the air.
